Organizing Your College List
A good college list isn’t a ranked wishlist — it’s a working set of relationships you’re actively managing at different stages.
Group schools by tier, not just by name
Section titled “Group schools by tier, not just by name”Split your list into three rough tiers based on realistic athletic fit:
- Reach — programs where you’d need significant growth or a standout season to be competitive.
- Target — programs where your current profile is a realistic match.
- Likely — programs where you’d be a strong addition today.
Every tier deserves real effort. A list of only reach schools is the most common mistake athletes make.
Track relationship stage, not just school name
Section titled “Track relationship stage, not just school name”For each school, know where the relationship actually stands: has a coach responded, have you had a call, are you being recruited by an assistant vs. the head coach? Treating every school as “not yet replied” hides the ones that are quietly going cold.
Revisit the list quarterly
Section titled “Revisit the list quarterly”Priorities shift as offers come in and as your own results change. Revisit your tiers every few months rather than treating the list as fixed from day one — see Connecting Your Email to Inbox Athletics for how to keep every school’s status current automatically.
