Writing Your First Email to a Coach

A coach reads hundreds of introductory emails a season. Yours has a few seconds to prove it’s worth a reply.

Keep it short and specific

Lead with who you are, your graduation year, your position, and one or two concrete measurables (GPA, times, stats). Coaches skim first — the goal is to earn a second read, not to tell your whole story in one email.

Make it about their program, not just you

Reference something specific about the school or program — a recent result, a coaching philosophy, an academic program you’re interested in. A generic email that could be sent to any school reads as a generic email sent to every school, because it usually was.

Always include

• Your name, grad year, and position
• Key stats or measurables
• A link to video or stats profile
• Your contact information and, where relevant, your parents’ contact info

Timing matters
